Where I'm From
by George Ella Lyon
I am from clothespins,
from Clorox and carbon-tetrachloride.
I am from the dirt under the back porch.
(Black, glistening,
it tasted like beets.)
I am from the forsythia bush
the Dutch elm
whose long-gone limbs I remember
as if they were my own.
I'm from fudge and eyeglasses,
from Imogene and Alafair.
I'm from the know-it-alls
and the pass-it-ons,
from Perk up! and Pipe down!
I'm from He restoreth my soul
with a cottonball lamb
and ten verses I can say myself.
I'm from Artemus and Billie's Branch,
fried corn and strong coffee.
From the finger my grandfather lost
to the auger,
the eye my father shut to keep his sight.
Under my bed was a dress box
spilling old pictures,
a sift of lost faces
to drift beneath my dreams.
I am from those moments--
snapped before I budded --
leaf-fall from the family tree.

Where I’m From
by Brynn Siles
I am from soccer balls,
From Justice and Westminster AFC.
I am from the place where mother nature cannot make up her mind.
On and off.
Like a lightswitch.
I am from dribble, shoot, score.
From the back of the net
time and time again.
I am from the place where sleeping in is non-existent.
I am from a family where mathematical talent is obvious.
From Barbara and John
and Nathan and Colin.
I am from Christmas Eve crab legs
And hand-made birthday cakes.
From “Twin Power” and “Overacheiver.”
I’m from handmade rosaries and Christmas Eve prayers.
I’m from Georgia and Germany, Ireland and England.
From German pretzels and soda bread.
From the lame jokes of my father
And perfect mirror-writing at an early age.
Camera’s packed with photos from family vacations and important moments.
But most of all, I am from a group
A family
But I am just beginning my own chapter of the book of life.
